On the afternoon of 7 October, the WAEH community gathered for the annual Member Meeting – a moment where the global network truly comes together. Representatives from eye hospitals worldwide discussed the strategic direction for the coming year, including the Action Plan, ongoing collaborations, and the proposed budget to support new and continuing initiatives.

During the afternoon programme of Tuesday October 7 speakers shared experiences on establishing and expanding low vision services in diverse healthcare systems, emphasized the importance of integrating rehabilitation within eye hospitals, and presented academic insights into the multifaceted nature of low vision care. 

The session was moderated by Mr. Jean Pierre Klumpp from the Hôpital ophtalmique Jules-Gonin (Lausanne, Switzerland), the host of the first part of the WAEH meeting.

  • Mr. Lucien Panchaud, Community Health Director, Hôpital ophtalmique Jules-Gonin (Lausanne, Switzerland) presented “What We Do Today & Future Pathways in Low Vision.”
  • Prof. Silvio Ionta, Associate Professor in Visual Neuropsychology & Rehabilitation Technology, and Dr. Diego Ghezzi, PhD, Head of Ophthalmic and Neural Technologies Research Group, Hôpital ophtalmique Jules-Gonin (Lausanne, Switzerland) presented “Low Vision Human Neuroscience.
  • Dr. Wajid Khan, Chief of Medical Services and Dean, Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital (Pakistan) presented “Establishing Low Vision Services in Pakistan — Role of Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.
  • Mrs. Suha Almusa, Director of Vision Rehabilitation Center, King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) presented “Closing the Gap: Why Low Vision Belongs Inside the Eye Hospital.
  • Dr. Sherry H. Day, Clinical Assistant Professor, Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA) presented “Multi-facets of Low Vision Care in an Academic Medical Center.

The day concluded with a wrap-up session, bringing together key reflections and takeaways from all speakers.

Welcoming Dinner, Grandveaux
| Tuesday 7 October, 2025


During the welcoming dinner at Grandvaux, guests were treated to a truly special performance by our Swedish colleagues, Sten Kjellström and Gauti Johannesson, who surprised everyone with their original composition ‘The Glaucoma Song’. With Jean Pierre Klumpp on the drums and Maaike van Zuilen and Muriel Faienza as fabulous back-up singers, the song quickly became one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

AI and Data in Eye Health – The Impact of the Use of AI in Diagnostics, Patient Monitoring, and Surgical Decision-making

The session was moderated by Mr. Jean Pierre Klumpp and Dr. Ciara Bergin from the Hôpital ophtalmique Jules-Gonin (Lausanne, Switzerland). The presentations about AI and data in eyehospitals highlighted a broad spectrum of developments, including image-based diagnostic decision-making, the transformative potential of oculomics, the strategic integration of artificial intelligence within hospital systems, and new methods for ensuring image quality and exam management through AI-enabled platforms.

  • Prof. Dr. Pearse Kean, Moorfields Eye Hospital (London, United Kingdom), delivered a presentation on “Oculomics – The Paradigm Change in Healthcare.
  • Mr. Jian Zhang, President, The Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (China), discussed “Strategic Integration: AI and Data in Our Eye Hospital’s Future.
  • Mr. Johann Gutton, Head of the Data Science and Innovation Unit, Adolphe de Rothschild Foundation Hospital (HFAR) (Paris, France), presented “How to Innovate Fundus Quality Management with the Use of AI? About the Implementation of an AI-Oriented Dashboard.
  • Mrs. Elodie Lagarde, Directrice du pôle transformation des parcours et transformation digitale, Hôpital National des 15-20 (Paris, France), together with Mr. Gautier Gagnant, Project Manager, presented “Benefits of a Single Platform to Store, File, Index and Archive All Ophthalmologic Exams.
  • Mr. Sebastiaan van Meyel, PhD, The Rotterdam Eye Hospital (The Netherlands), shared insights from a validation study titled “Population-Based Screening for Glaucoma by Means of a Deep-Learning Algorithm on Color Fundus Images.

Workforce Development and Leadership in Ophthalmology – Retaining and Developing a Highly Skilled Workforce is Essential for Quality and Innovation – Part I

The session about workforce development and leadership was moderated by Mrs. Ingrid Vernez, Human Resources Director, Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital, and Mr. Jos Hubers, Director of Human Resources, The Rotterdam Eye Hospital.

During the session HR experts of WAEH member-eyehospitals addressed key aspects of strategic workforce development like task differentiation g, and professional well-being within ophthalmic care. Together, these presentations offered a comprehensive view of how ophthalmic institutions worldwide are innovating to strengthen their teams. 

  • Dr. Nicolas Miklaszewski, Director of Nursing and Allied Health Services, and Mr. Olivier Duclaud, Senior Health Care Executive, both from Hôpital National des 15-20 (France), presented “Seeing Clearly: Mapping the Role of Nurses at the 15-20 Hospital.
  • Dr. Gauti Jóhannesson, Chief Medical Officer, St. Erik Eye Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden), gave a presentation titled “Choosing Wisely in Glaucoma Care.
  • Mrs. Kati Ranta, Tilkka Eye Hospital (Finland), shared her insights in “Expanding Nurses’ Scope of Practice: Implementing On-Site Training for Intravitreal Injections.
  • Mr. Maurice Lambert, Head of HR, University Eye Clinic Maastricht, UMC+ (The Netherlands), discussed “Strategic Workforce Planning at University Eye Clinic Maastricht.
  • Mrs. Mu Xiuwen, Affiliated Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (Wenzhou, China), presented “Risk Factors Predicting Psychology Related Burnout Among Chinese Ophthalmological Healthcare Workers: A Cross-Sectional Survey.
  • Mr. Reuben Cruz, Senior Manager Nursing & Clinical Education, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (Miami, USA), concluded the session with “Impact of Surgical Eye Care Training Program on Self-Efficacy of Nurses Working in Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgery.

  • Miss Jay Varia, Principal Optometrist, Clinician and Head of Optometry Education, Moorfields Eye Hospital (London, United Kingdom), shared insights on “Advancing Ophthalmic Care: Education, Identity, and the Impact on the UK Ophthalmic Workforce.
  • Dr. V. Gayatri Devi M. Vairavan, The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (Malaysia), presented “Workforce Development and Leadership in Ophthalmology Strategy at The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital.
  • Mrs. Tracy Siggins, Director of Ambulatory Services, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (Melbourne, Australia), discussed “Developing Alternate Utilisation of Traditional Roles.

The session concluded with an open discussion, followed by a wrap-up led by Mr. Jean Pierre Klumpp.

Wai Poster Award presented at WAEH 2025 in Lausanne
| Outcomes of the 19th Annual WAEH Meeting 2025

During the WAEH Annual Meeting 2025 in Lausanne, the Wai Best Poster Award was presented to the team from the Aier Eye Hospital Group. The award was handed over by Charity Wai. In the photo – from left to right – are Chloe MengdiCharity WaiYao ZhaoShaomin Peng, and Yufei Liu.

The Wai Poster Award is a people’s choice award: all participants receive two stickers, which they can place on the posters they find most inspiring, innovative, or relevant. With an impressive number of votes, the Aier team emerged as the winner this year.

A remarkable detail this year was the number of submissions: no fewer than 35 posters competed – likely the highest number ever at a WAEH Annual Meeting. A unique and celebratory milestone for the growing exchange of knowledge within our global community.

The poster “Reducing environmental and cost impact in ophthalmology: A pilot to replace single-use tropicamide 1% eye drops” from Moorfields Eye Hospital caught also the attention of Charity Wai from the Singapore National Eye Centre. It was selected as runner-up for its outstanding content and presentation!

The program began at 14:30 with a welcome in the conference hall and a speech by Mr. Nicolas Peju, CEO of Hôpital National des 15-20. At 14:40, Professor C. Baudouin presented on Research at 15-20 – IHU Foresight, followed by Sophie Lacombe, Ergotherapist, and Bruno Koubi, Head of Legal Affairs and Partnerships, who shared insights in “When the 15-20 Eye Hospital Opens Its Eyes to Rehabilitation: Insights from the Institut Saint-Louis.

In the afternoon, participants toured the hospital in groups. The visit concluded with a walk to Hotel Le Jardin du Marais for some welcoming drinks.

This series of presentations explored how ophthalmic institutions are redesigning their service models, infrastructure, and operational strategies to meet growing patient demand. The speakers highlighted approaches to expanding patient access through integrated digital and clinical platforms, achieving operational excellence in large-scale intravitreal injection centers, and implementing major hospital redevelopment initiatives. Together, these contributions illustrated how strategic redesign, scalable care models, and system-level innovation are driving more efficient, connected, and patient-centred ophthalmic services.

A panel discussion titled ‘A Shared Vision on Myopia in Europe‘ featured Prof. Damien Gatinel on long-term follow-up of high myopes after refractive surgery, Prof. Aude Couturier on slowing down the progression of myopia in children, and Prof. Dan Miléa on artificial intelligence in neuro-ophthalmology and new frontiers in brain understanding. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Christophe Panthier, Hôpital Fondation Adolphe de Rothschild, Paris, France.

  • Prof. Aude Couturier, Rothschild Foundation Hospital, France, presented ‘Intraoperative OCT and 3D Visualization in Highly Myopic Eyes and Complex Vitreoretinal Surgery: Pushing the Boundaries of Eye Care’.

During this session we explored how eye hospitals can reduce their environmental impact through more sustainable surgical practices and waste management. The presentations highlighted strategies for lowering the carbon footprint of cataract and refractive surgery, integrating circular resource models into high-volume clinical settings, and promoting responsible disposal of commonly used ophthalmic materials such as contact lenses. Together, the speakers illustrated how environmental stewardship is becoming an integral part of modern eye care, inspiring collaborative action toward greener and more sustainable clinical pathways.

Joy Adesanya (Moorfields Eye Hospital, United Kingdom) was awarded with the Dato Kula Best Presentation Award for her presentation “HERCULES – Operational Efficiency in Care of Chronic Eye Disease.” Brendon Gardner (The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Australia) handed over the award during the 19th Annual WAEH Meeting on Saturday 11 October.
