Dr. Vinay from the Suraj Eye Institute met with us online to present and tell us all about the Institute’s wonderful work and ambitions! Meeting with the Suraj Eye Institute

The  Suraj Eye institute has improved over a million lives since their inauguration in 2002. They have performed cataract surgeries for 25.000 patients, done special procedures for 10.000 patients and served more than a 1000 villages and trained one thousand community health workers. They encourage and promote cooperation between all departments and Instill in everyone that every activity is vital and no department is paramount. Their key values are to always be transparent with their patients and they strife to never compromise Eye Care quality.

Light to lives project

“India is the second most populous country in the world and home to over 20% of the world blind population. Unfortunately, India is also home to the largest number of women and men suffering from cataract in any one country.” The Suraj Eye Institute created the “light to lives” project to reach out to the rural poor communities in Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia. “Literally to create vision where non existed.”

Central India KidSight – Partners with OrBis

Their flagship program was created in partnership with ORBIS. As a partner member, they’ve reached out to more than 200.000 children! They assessed their Vitamin 2 prevalence, visual impairment and neeld for glasses. The Suraj Eye Institute a fine paediatric eye care center and program to provide sight for children, from the most backward villages and districts of Vidharba.

The Nagpur Million Project

1.2 Million – 50% of Nagpur’s population lives in slums. With no access to the most basic eyecare, The Project reaches out to these communities about 16 times a month, offering refraction, cataract surgery and glasses and checking blood sugar levels and blood pressure. 

Their future quality improvement initiatives

The Suraj Eye Institute has done amazing things and they’ve assisted in many rural and poor communities across India. They’re always aiming to give high quality eye care and support their patients. They have prepared a list to fulfill this goal, which includes incorporating more patient feedback, better HR records, better reporting procedures, more safety rounds and a greater awareness of Biomedical Waste Management!
