INTRODUCTION

The hospital also receives clients from some neighboring countries, which include Zimbabwe and Angola and from overseas. The hospital is an Institution under the Seventh-day Adventist church in Zambia. And was established with support from partners that include Operation Eyesight Universal, The Lions of Germany District Rhineland through the Sight First Program of the Lions Clubs International, and Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM). It has its origins in the blindness prevention program that was established in Yuka and Mwami Hospitals in the Western and Eastern Province respectively.Lusaka Eye Hospital is a not-for-profit organization that provides both fee-paying and non-fee paying services to the Zambian community.

ABOUT Lusaka Eye Hospital

Lusaka Eye Hospital is one of the leading institutions in eye care in Zambia, treating an average of between 17,000 to 20,000 patients with various eye conditions every year. On average, we operate on about 1,600 to 1,800 cases per year, with approximately 750 to 900 being sight-restoring surgeries (cataract cases).

The hospital provides both hospital based and outreach ophthalmology services. For outreach, we target areas that have little or no access to ophthalmology services and have high rates of eye diseases.

The hospital management has embarked on an ambitious program of expanding the institution through increased service delivery becoming a center of excellence in eye health care in the region. The institution is focused on five strategic objectives:

a. To be a tertiary center of excellence offering comprehensive advanced eye health services.
b. To employ and retain the best talent that is able to offer quality service as per institution human resource requirements.
c. To be a self-sustaining Christian private eye hospital that also provides community eye health outreach and charity services. .
d. To establish and maintain strategic partnerships in eye care services.
e. To increase the volume of clients accessing the services from the current 20,000 to 30,000 per year by 2025.

These objectives will only be attainable with support from both private and corporate foundations, civil society, businesses, corporations, and individuals committed to seeing communities that are free from preventable blindness.

With the establishment of a Centre of Excellence, they believe they will be able to reduce the number of patients referred to India and other developed nations for specialty eye care.Since its inception, Lusaka Eye Hospital has not received any major upgrade. The sponsored membership by the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH) will help turn LEH into a Centre of Excellence.
