Effectiveness of myopia control in China: evidence from a real-world study

Summary

Background: While numerous myopia interventions exist, a significant “efficacy-effectiveness divergence” persists between clinical trials and real-world practice.

Methods: This multi-center, real-world study analyzed data from 100 hospitals across China, involving children aged 3–18 years. Effectiveness was defined as annual SER change <0.50 D or AL change <0.20 mm.

Results: Analysis of 26,111 participants revealed that RLRL (84.2%), Orthokeratology (60.0%), and Defocus Spectacles (56.7%) outperformed Single Vision Spectacles (41.2%). Notably, real-world effectiveness was lower than RCT-reported results, likely due to suboptimal adherence. Subgroup analysis showed significant performance variations across hospital types, highlighting the need for standardized clinical protocols. Furthermore, interventions like accommodative therapy and acupuncture demonstrated a lack of evidence-based effectiveness (30.9%–36.8%).

Conclusions: This study 2 provides the first comprehensive real-world evidence for myopia interventions in China. The findings emphasize the importance of evidence-based regulatory oversight and suggest that personalized intervention curves can optimize pediatric myopia management.
