  • Update THONEH
    • Maaike spoke with Michael Goh – CEO of THONEH about their membership and position in the board

  • China – ZOC
  1. ZOC is one of the leading (if not the leading) government eye centres in China
  2. The centre is the State Key Laboratory for Ophthalmology, being the only one in China that is accorded National status
  3. ZOC is a major research powerhouse with competitive research standards of international level. These include clinical research, epidemiology, basic science research and translational research.
  4. ZOC is one of the biggest eye hospitals in China in terms of patient volume
  5. ZOC is a major training centre (part of Sun Yat Sen University) for medical students, ophthalmology residents, graduate students and PhDs
  6. In terms of worldwide prominence, ZOC should be part of WAEH as a member, as they are a major academic eye centre in China (in contrast to current Chinese WAEH members which are private).

4. WAEH Projects

  • Three projects started, all have presented during the Annual Meeting. Update per project:
    • WAEH 2023 – Assessing Evidence-based Management Practices and variations within WAEH member hospitals. Lead by The Maastricht University Clinic for Ophthalmology and Aravind Eye Care System: Frank van den Biggelaar andGanesh Babu
      • Currently, the project is in stage #1.
      • Next steps:
        • Finalize questionnaire
        • Develop the questionnaire in Survey Monkey / Google forms
        • Circulate to all the members through Ms Maaike
        • Data analysis
        • Individual hospital report
        • Publication of survey
      • Update project
    • WAEH 2023 – Evaluating the Provision of Ophthalmic Nurse Education among WAEH member countries. Lead by Tendai Gwenhure from the Moorfields Eye Hospital.
        • Next steps of the project is to try and collectively come up with what should be considered as the core competencies (the minimum competency level/requirement (about 10 core competencies) of an ophthalmic nurse. This is open to discussion.
    • WAEH 2023 – Volunteer to Career. This project was submitted by Moorfields Eye Hospital + Community of Practice Human Resources. Lead by Angela Smith (Moorfields) and Jos Hubers (Rotterdam Eye Hospital).
5. Communities of Practice

  • Human Resources – will meet four times in 2024
    1. Met last year every 3 months
    2. Last meeting Thursday December 7 – the group is growing
    3. Dates to be finalized
    • Nurses – they will meet four times in 2024
      1. February 27th– Research impact on clinical practice 
      2. May 16th– Clinical leaderships (eg clinical innovation and new care pathways)
      3. September 6th– Opthalmic nurse education/professional development 
      4. December 12 – Clinical / specialist role (e.g. Diana’s role in nurse-led cross-linking service)
