Introduction phaco-emulsification in Cape Verde
In May and June 2009 a small group of the Rotterdam Eye Hospital, one of the members of the WAEH, has visited Cape Verde to introduce the modern cataract operation ‘phaco-emulsification’ in Cape Verde.
The group existed out of a nurse for training the nurses in Cape Verde to take care of the pre- and post-operation of the cataract operations, an operation-assistant for training the local operations-assistants, a social worker which focussed on the ophthalmological epidemiology and ofcourse and ophthalomologist which trained the local ophthalomologists.
After two and a half weeks of hard working and training, 47 patients have undergone a phaco-emulsification.
Conclusion:
The introduction of the phaco-emulsification is a possible case in Cape Verde. It would be good to do a second training session in about 3/4 of a year.
