On September 24, 2026, the Seventh Beijing Municipal Ceremony for the Academic Succession of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Experts was held in Beijing. Organized by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the event aims to preserve the academic expertise of renowned senior TCM practitioners and cultivate a new generation of skilled TCM professionals.

At the ceremony, Dr. Tian Ni, Director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Ophthalmology and academic leader of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Ophthalmology at Beijing Tongren Hospital, was selected as an academic successor in the seventh cohort of the Beijing municipal TCM mentorship program. She formally became a student of Professor Wei Qiping, the fourth-generation successor of the Yanjing Wei School of Ophthalmology, continuing the hospital’s tradition of TCM inheritance and innovation.

The Yanjing Wei School of Ophthalmology has its roots in traditional medicine and has developed through generations of clinical practice. Over four generations, its distinctive theories and treatment approaches have become influential in the field of TCM ophthalmology, both in China and abroad.

Professor Wei Qiping, a fourth-generation successor of the school and a renowned TCM physician in Beijing, has decades of experience in clinical practice and education. He has served as a mentor for the fifth, sixth, and seventh national cohorts of renowned senior TCM experts and has received several major scientific awards, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Dr. Tian Ni is a Chief Physician and doctoral supervisor. She currently leads the Department of Traditional Chinese Ophthalmology at Beijing Tongren Hospital and is responsible for the development of the national key discipline in TCM ophthalmology. She holds several academic positions in the field of integrated Chinese and Western medicine, has led a project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of several major ophthalmology textbooks.

With more than 20 years of experience in integrated traditional Chinese and Western ophthalmology, Dr. Tian combines TCM diagnostic and treatment principles with modern ophthalmic surgical techniques and specializes in the integrated treatment of complex and difficult eye diseases. She has received several professional honors, including “Lingnan Famous Physician” and “Yangcheng Good Doctor.”

Regarding the mentorship, Dr. Tian said she hopes to systematically learn from Professor Wei Qiping’s clinical experience, further explore the academic principles of the Yanjing Wei School of Ophthalmology, and apply this knowledge to difficult clinical cases and the development of her department.

During the ceremony, Professor Wei presented Dr. Tian with professional books and encouraged her to devote herself to clinical practice and uphold the mission of passing on the school’s traditions.

Dr. Tian said that becoming an academic successor in the seventh Beijing municipal cohort and the fifth-generation successor of the Wei School of Ophthalmology is both an honor and a significant responsibility. She will use the platform of Beijing Tongren Hospital to apply what she learns to clinical care, research, and professional training, while continuing to improve the department’s integrated Chinese and Western ophthalmology services and benefit more patients.

The Department of Traditional Chinese Ophthalmology at Beijing Tongren Hospital is a national key discipline in TCM ophthalmology and integrates medical care, education, and research. The hospital places great importance on developing TCM talent and preserving academic traditions. Through mentorship and intergenerational transmission, it seeks to preserve valuable TCM knowledge while encouraging innovation and the continued development of integrated traditional Chinese and Western ophthalmology.
