New Associate WAEH Member: Oftálmica Clínica de la Visión
WAEH warmly congratulates Oftálmica Clínica de la Visión with their associate membership of the WAEH as the very first Peruvian member! We’re delighted to welcome them to our global network and look forward to sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences and learning from one another.
Get to know Oftálmica Clínica de la Visión and discover their inspiring story, commitment to high-quality eye care, and ambitions for the future in their introduction below!
Oftálmica Clínica de la Visión was founded in 1993 by three ophthalmologists — Dr. Carlos Siverio Zaffirio, Dr. Rubén Berrospi Rodríguez and Dr. Gerardo Arana Kaik — at one of the most difficult moments in Peru’s recent history. The country was emerging from years of political instability and internal armed conflict, and private investment had all but stopped. The three founders chose to build anyway, convinced that Peruvians should not have to leave their own country to receive high-quality eye care. More than thirty years later, that conviction is still the reason the hospital exists.
In 2023 the founders handed the hospital over to the next generation: Dr. Carlos Siverio Llosa, Dr. Rubén Berrospi Salcedo and Dr. Rodrigo Arana Shaw — the three founders’ sons, all ophthalmologists — who have continued the hospital’s growth while preserving the ethics and patient-centred approach on which it was built.
Research and training. This year Oftálmica was authorised by Peru’s Instituto Nacional de Salud as a clinical research site, and we are committed to conducting studies and contributing our case volume as a significant centre in the region. We have also launched our first Vitreoretinal Fellowship, led by our Medical Director and Head of Retina, Dr. Rodrigo Arana Shaw, whose international training includes an observership at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
Clinical team and technology. Our staff are surgical ophthalmologists,(19) each with at least one subspecialty, trained through fellowships and observerships at institutions including Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Wills Eye Hospital and Boston University Medical Center. Oftálmica is one of only five centres in Peru authorised to perform corneal transplantation. We invest in technology where it changes what the patient experiences: we were the first hospital in Latin America to operate with the ZEISS ARTEVO 850 digital microscope, and the first in Peru with the Alcon Unity VCS platform.
How we measure ourselves. Respect for the patient and personalised care delivered with advanced technology are what define us. Our internally measured Net Promoter Score averages 80 annually — well above the benchmarks we see in Peruvian healthcare.
As an associate member of the WAEH we look forward to benchmarking our clinical and operational performance against leading eye hospitals worldwide, and to contributing the perspective of a specialised eye hospital working in Latin America.
